The MTV show about the guys from Texas was called "Austin Stories" you can do a search on yourtube.com and you will find episodes 1 to 7. You can also find shows like "FEAR". Does anyone knows if MTV finally realese the show on DVD call "The State"? This show was about short sketches. Remember the Weird Al Yankovic show on MTV with the hamster helicopter.
I just bought TWO of these yesterday. They were on sale and I could resist the price.

This morning I thought I would run some water through before I used it for the first time. I put 16oz of water in, and hopped in the shower. When i got out I thought my kitchen was on fire.

I first made sure my 2 year old was alive, and then I ran downstairs, because of the smell.

I discovered My barista was broken, and water was all over the counter. I wiped up the mess, and was super pissed. Actually, beyond super pissed.

Then I, like others, harnessed the power of the internet, and googled Starbucks Aroma Solo and found out so much disappointing information about this product and its engineering snafu.

Starbucks, three hours of staff retraining this week isn't enough to regain my trust in your corporate decision to continue to market a product they knew to have an obvious and dangerous design flaw.

Thank goodness for the actuarial scientist who crunched the numbers and decided it was cheaper to endager the lives of their loyal customers then notify them of their faulty product.

This evening, I was determined to figure out where this flaw was. The first Barista (which fried and no longer turns on -after only one use) is basically useless. But I really wanted to know what was at the root of the leak.

Guess what, Barista #2, was fine. Perfect actually.

So I compared the two. They both looked almost identical other than 1 sticker being a lighter shade of lavender, and one machine having some digits pressed in the plastic base in a spot where the other didn't.

The difference lies in the engineering of something that isn't pictured very well on page 6 of the .pdf manual

http://www.starbucksstore.com/images/products/pdf/3_Aroma_Solo_manual-new.pdf

Its #4 (I think) Removable internal filter basket.
or the basket that holds the "long lasting mesh filter"

The .pdf points to its rim in the photo, but dosn't have a picture of it outside of the machine, to show the spring mechanism.

The one that broke:

The springy thing was designed with the wrong angle, it has a larger springyness and has a little tiny nipple shape at the end that goes inside the hole.

Basically the thermos rim is supposed to rub up against it and push the springy thing up so that nipple pops out of the hole and coffee comes out. But since the angle is bad, it dosn't come out how it should. The thermos ends up barely touching it and your coffee ends up pooling in the filter basket. (which dosn't hold 16 oz)

At some point it seems Starbucks figured it out and chose to stay mum about their fuck-up. I'm not. I'm posting this everywhere I can.

My second beef is, is it really necessary to use 5 1/3 TABLESPOONS to make 16 oz coffee?

I too purchased this machine. I live alone and only brew 1 cup per day - unless it is the weekend. This thing is driving me nutz! It leaks constantly - all over the counter. I scares me to use it as there is electricity and water involved - duh! After reading all of these comments, I am off to Starbucks to return it! For a refund if I can!

Looking for the name of the MTV show, I think it was one of the first TRUE LIFE episodes, about these brothers that dated a lot of girls, they thought they were all that, they called themselves the DOG BROTHERS....at the end they gave tips to this nerdish guy on how to pick up girls..they wore a lot of fake tan lotion, one brother had long hair, would tell girls he was from BON JOVI....

LEAK FIX: The mug is the cause of the leaks. I noticed the leak occurred where the open flap latches to the back part of the lid. The two do not seal together tight enough to stop coffee flow between them. There's no lip or ridge on the back part of the lid. It's like trying to pour milk in a bowl that's missing a side. If you cut a rubber piece from a canning jar seal to fit and lay on the back part of the lid (where the open flap connects) you will create enough of a ridge around the lid the stop the flow over the side of the mug. I have had great success with this method. Ideally, the lid should have been designed with a ridge all the way around the lid that the flap could still latch over. I noticed that ALL of Starbucks travel mugs are currently designed with this type of lid. I also have had the same issues with this machine as all of you, as well as having the machine finish brewing and beep before all the water has been processed -- even soon after a good white vinegar cleaning.

I just purchased one of these at a salvation army .looks almost new, for 6 bucks.works like a charm, you have to be a mild retard to get it wrong. of course it does need to be cleaned properly after each use but i just made coffee again after reading some of these comments and i tried to screw it up to no avail,it still works like a charm. i do realize it is made in china and is truly junk and i'll most likely get a brain tumor the size of a grapefruit by my 7th cup but presently it seems to get super hot and make really good brew.as a word of advice, throw the gold filter in the trash,it is useless, use it and by day three your coffee will taste like your socks. just use a no.4 melitta paper filter. use a diluted vinigar to give a weekly cleaning and regular dishsoap daily with a good rinse.
