The Apocalypse
Does anyone ever feel like the world is slowly coming to an end? I should be a little more precise though, because slowly could imply anything. Assuming that the earth’s life span is not infinite, then no matter how good the future looks, the world and civilization “as we know it” (movie cliche) will always be slowly coming to an end. Back to what I was saying though — I believe the world is coming to an end within our lifetime, or soon thereafter.
I understand that this opinion may very well make me sound like a nutjob. But I think the exceedingly carefree attitude that people have lived with for so long has finally caught up with us. In the past there really wasn’t much regard for posterity, and there still isn’t. For example, we didn’t finally fix CFCs until the late 70s, and CFCs just ripped apart the stratospheric ozone. The same goes for oil — even though it is completely evident that our oil supply is in serious trouble, no one is changing their habits. We do, however, assume that as soon as the oil supply runs out, we will conveniently and instantly have a perfect alternative. I am not even going to get started on global warming. I’ll just let you read about it here.
Does anyone ever get scared about the prospects of cloning, and all the other freaky medical advancements? People are never going to die! I feel like the health industry is reaching a horrific and apocalyptic breaking point. People will live to be 140 years old, the large majority of the population won’t have jobs, and the world will be severly over populated in general.
Does anyone ever honestly assess how delicate our nation is? We are not impervious to attacks, which many people have had to come to terms with since September 11th. But, I think we are much more vulnerable than people may want to believe. A guy has been calling into Michael Savage’s radio show lately warning of thousands of undercover terrorists hiding away in the 20 biggest American cities, and they are equipped with nuclear suitcase bombs. Apparently, it’s only a matter of time before this plan is set into action, as Osama Bin Laden is “waiting for the perfect time.” This is something that I don’t believe (or maybe I just don’t want to believe it, regardless of its rationality), but it does lead me to question how safe we really are. It doesn’t take much to terrorize the United States with nuclear weapons, especially when the terrorists have so many potential suicide bombers at their disposal.
Well… Not an entirely awesome and uplifting post to start off the new year… Haha sorry about that. I am going to listen to that one R.E.M. song now, “It’s the End of the World as We Know It.” I think it has a pretty good message, because in the end all that matters is happiness, regardless of the status quo. But I’m probably not doing anything to advance your happiness by making a post like this.

You’re as gullible as you are stupid.

What makes you say that KEITH JOHNSON?

Actually Nick you’re neither gullible or stupid. After reading your masterfully written article I am also terrified that our country is going to blown up. I don’t have much reason for this other than the fact Some Guy has called in repeatedly to a radio show telling me so. I don’t know why, but I put alot credence is this random guy who apparently knows all the doings of the terrorist organizations.

I’m not confident in what that guy says at all. However, it made me think about our nation’s vulnerability to attacks, as I said in the post. I don’t believe what that man says will happen, but it could very well happen.

Here’s an interesting take on the Apocalypse. Perhaps every civilization that ascends to this point in society ultimately destroys itself. It all stems rom control. Try to control an uncontrollable force instead of moving with it, and you get destroyed. Perhaps it seems slow from our perspective, but if we do destroy the Earth it will be quite quick on a universal scale. Learn to live in uncertainty, you live in it anyways.
I know the Earth isn’t by any means eternal, but at the exponential rate of destruction we are moving at, it is irresponsible, childlike, and quite sad that people still are caught in a capitalistic and corporate view of our impact on the world.
99% of the food we buy supports destroying agriculture and our ecosystem. (Not an exact percent, just wanted to factor in the purely organic farming) BTW government changed definition of organic, not too many people realize organic doesn’t mean what you think anymore.)
The many paper products we use come from non reusable sources, such as long standing forests, or the very rainforests from which evolved from.
All of the fossil fuels we use up only help to destroy our ecosystem.
There are many many many more examples of how every little action we do in this society helps to quicken the eternal force’s, which is the universe itself, destruction of us.
Why go to outer space? To look for more resources, the ones we could have here? That’s what bacteria does, looks for resources, uses them up, then moves on.
HOW ARROGANT THE EGO IS. To think that mere humans can, should, and have the right to control the Earth and implicitly the Universe.
The ego destroys the Earth. Funny, ancient philosophers have known this from the start. It’s a shame that the ego won’t allow people to hear rational ideas when it contradicts the ego.
We must destroy the ego before it destroys us.
We have all heard this before, apply it on a larger scale, please.
